Ani ruins are over 1500 km away from İzmir. By train, you’ll have the chance to discover Turkey’s two overnight trains at one travel, and have some time to see Konya.
You’ll take the overnight train (better in sleeper) to Konya, high speed train to Ankara and another overnight train to Kars. Travel will take 2 days, but you’ll have some time to see Eskişehir and Ankara. Train will be at Kars in the evening, thus you need to stay at hotel in Kars.
Go to Basmane train station.
Take Konya Mavi (İzmir-Konya) train to Konya. It’ll take about 12 hours (689 km).
Take Ankara-Konya (YHT) train to Ankara. It’ll take about 01:45 hours (310 km).
Take Dogu Express (Ankara-Kars) train to Kars. It’ll take about 24 hours (1310 km).

Ruins are situated at 46 km east of Kars, next to Armenian border. There’s no regular public transport service to there from Kars. The options are rent a car, agree with a minibus together with other travelers or talk with a tour company at Kars. It’s 46 km away and will take about 1 hour.
