Tehran-Ankara: The train ride

Gaia Squarci, Italian photographer and cinematographer based in New York, contributor of Prospekt agency and Reuters, photographed the journey from Ankara to Tehran.

The Tehran-Ankara route leads through a 72-hour journey of frozen landscapes and small towns, interrupted by the nighttime crossing of lake Van by ferry, shortly after entering the Turkish territory. Many Iranians board the train on a one-way journey, moving to Turkey to find better employment opportunities and freedom. Passengers look after each other, share food, play music and exchange stories, before parting ways and starting their new lives in a land that many of them have never visited before.
